Wood Bench with Storage

Building the Bench Base

Choose quality 2×4 lumber for the base. Measure accurately according to your entryway's size. Cut the 2x4s to size, ensuring precision for a solid foundation.

Place the bottom board flush with the floor and secure it to wall studs using screws. Use a level to ensure proper alignment as you attach side pieces to the floorboard. Secure the rear piece to the side beams, creating snug corners.

Attach the top beam across the upper edge to lock the frame into a square shape. Secure each joint with screws, paying extra attention to corners. The stability of your bench depends on this crucial first step.

Building the Storage Box

Cut plywood pieces for the front, back, bottom, and sides of your storage box. Measure and mark carefully to avoid gaps or misalignments.

Add dividers based on your storage needs. Use pocket hole screws for strong joints when assembling the box. Attach front and back panels to the sides, ensuring everything is square. Secure the bottom piece to complete the box.

Insert and secure dividers using pocket hole screws for added internal strength. This creates a sturdy storage solution that can withstand daily use.

Constructing the Bench Top

Select either solid wood or plywood for your bench top, ensuring it spans the entire storage box. Consider adding a continuous hinge for a flip-open design, marking its position precisely.

  • Position the top piece onto the storage box
  • Secure it firmly with screws, starting from the corners
  • If you've added a hinge, ensure it functions smoothly

Apply a weather-resistant finish to protect the bench top from daily wear. Choose between a simple urethane coat or a stained look. Allow the finish to dry completely before use.

Finishing Touches and Installation

Choose a paint or wood stain that complements your home's aesthetic. Apply evenly and follow with a protective varnish for durability.

Consider adding trim to the edges for a polished look. Anchor the bench securely to the wall studs for stability.

Install coat hooks above the bench, positioning them at a convenient height. Add decorative cushions for comfort and style, choosing weather-resistant materials for high-traffic areas.

Your completed entryway bench now combines functionality with personal style, offering a welcoming addition to your home.
