Making Wooden Spice Racks

Cutting the Wood

A tape measure is essential for this DIY project. Precise measurements ensure every piece aligns perfectly for your spice rack. Start with the two side pieces, cutting them to 3 inches high and 2.5 inches wide.

For the base, cut it to about 11.5 inches long, ensuring a snug fit in your cabinet without overcrowding.

Cut the dowels half an inch longer than the base to fit securely into the side pieces. Accuracy here prevents wobbly racks.

After cutting, arrange all pieces and check the edges. If they're rough, use a sander for smoothness. Your spice rack deserves a polished finish.

Assembling the Rack

Use a Kreg Jig to secure the base to the side pieces without visible screw heads. Position the side pieces upright and lay the base flat. Pre-drill pocket holes through the base into the side pieces, then drive in Kreg screws designed for 90-degree connections.

For the dowels:

  1. Drill about 1/4" deep into each end piece following the pre-marked holes
  2. Slide the dowels into these holes, ensuring they're properly seated

Consider using epoxy or screws to hold everything in place. Apply epoxy carefully to contact points and press pieces firmly together for a seamless bond.

Allow ample time for the epoxy to cure before moving on to the finishing stage.

Sanding and Finishing

Start with a random orbital sander or sanding block using 100-grit sandpaper on rough edges. For a finer finish, step down to 220-grit sandpaper. After sanding, wipe away dust with a damp cloth.

Consider your sealing options:

  • Water-based polyurethane for a clear finish
  • Wood stain for a warm look
  • Paint for a splash of color

Apply your chosen finish in thin, even coats. If painting, allow sufficient drying time between coats to avoid drips.

Let the finish cure thoroughly to protect against spills and daily wear. Your DIY spice rack is now a testament to your skill and organization.

Mounting Techniques

Select an easily accessible spot in your kitchen that doesn't interfere with daily activities. Consider spaces like cabinet door interiors, fridge sides, or unused wall sections.

Clean the chosen surface thoroughly before applying Loctite Epoxy. Apply the adhesive evenly to the back of the spice rack, then carefully press it into place. Hold it steady as the epoxy begins to set, adjusting if needed.

"I attached the newly made wood spice holders using a very very very strong adhesive โ€“ Loctite Epoxy Instant Mix. Basically it's two formulas that mix together and provide a major adhesive mixture. DO NOT TOUCH IT."

While waiting for the epoxy to cure, plan your spice arrangement. Once secure, fill the rack with your collection, organizing for both functionality and visual appeal.
