Cut and Prepare Your Template
Use your utility knife to cut through the drywall and reveal the framing underneath. This step prepares the area for your new arch entrance.
Next, create a template using a piece of cardboard large enough for the full arc of your doorway. Hold it against the current frame and adjust until it fits perfectly.
Use this template to trace and cut out two plywood arches. These will form the backbone of your new doorway. Cut carefully along the lines with a jigsaw, maintaining a steady hand for precision.
Test the fit of your plywood arches by aligning them with the existing door frame. They should fit snugly without forcing. If necessary, sand edges for a better fit.
Secure Blocks and Hardboard
Cut arch blocks to fit between your plywood arches at roughly 6-inch intervals. These short, sturdy pieces will support the curve of your doorway.
Secure the blocks between the plywood arches using screws or an air nailer. Ensure a tight, rattle-free fit.
Next, bend hardboard strips along the contours of your arch. This flexible material will smooth out the frame, preparing it for the drywall application.
Carefully align the hardboard strips along your arch blocks and secure them with short nails or screws. Take your time to achieve a smooth surface, as this will affect the final drywall application.
Bend and Install Drywall
- Cut a strip of drywall to match the thickness of your wall.
- For standard 1/2-inch drywall, dampen the backside with a sponge or spray bottle to increase flexibility.
- Guide the dampened drywall into position, starting at the bottom and working your way up.
- Nail it to the arch blocks at consistent intervals, about every 6 inches.
- Install flexible plastic corner bead along the edges of your new opening for a clean finish.
- Fasten it securely with staples or screws, ensuring it's flush with the drywall surface.
As you complete these steps, you'll see your archway taking shape. The careful preparation and installation will result in a smooth, graceful curve that enhances your home's interior. Remember, patience and precision are key to achieving a professional-looking result.
