Materials and Tools

For this floating bed frame project, you'll need:

Materials:

  • Self-tapping wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • 2x6s and 2x4s lumber
  • Plywood sheets
  • Construction adhesive

Tools:

  • Miter saw
  • Circular saw
  • Drill/driver

These materials and tools will allow you to create a sturdy, professional-looking bed frame. The self-tapping screws and wood glue will ensure everything holds together securely, while the power tools will help you make precise cuts and joints.

Building the Base Frame

  1. Measure and mark the ends of your 2×6 boards using a Speed Square for accuracy.
  2. Assemble the side frames:
    • Align a 56-1/2-inch board flush to the end of a 48-inch board.
    • Fasten together using self-tapping screws.
    • Repeat for the opposite side.
  3. Add center support:
    • Mark the center line on the 48-inch boards.
    • Secure the center support board with screws.
  4. Install blocking:
    • Place 22-1/2-inch boards in marked positions.
    • Secure each block firmly with screws.

This base frame provides a stable foundation for your floating bed design.

Assembling the Top Frame

  1. Cut 2×6 boards to size for the top frame.
  2. Install the central support board:
    • Align it carefully within the structure.
    • Check marks on the 60-inch boards for proper positioning.
  3. Add support blocking:
    • Insert blocks strategically to prevent flexing.
    • Secure with screws.
  4. Combine top and bottom frames:
    • Place the top section onto the base, ensuring proper alignment.
    • Make sure center supports fit snugly.
    • Fasten the frames together with screws.

With the top frame in place, your floating bed is taking shape and nearing completion.
