Measure and Plan
Determining the right size for your sliding barn door requires precision. Measure the door frame's width and height accurately. Add extra inches on each side for good coverage when closed.
Consider styles and materials. Do you prefer reclaimed wood or a modern finish? Explore hardware options that complement your chosen style.
If space is limited, plan for a thinner door. Remember, the hardware needs room to function smoothly. Mark everything up ahead of time to avoid issues later.
Measure twice and cut (or order) once. It's a simple step, but it's the foundation of your barn door project.

Select and Prepare Materials
Choose your wood: pine, oak, or cedar. Each has its own character and benefits:
- Pine: Budget-friendly and easy to work with
- Oak: Offers durability with unique grain patterns
- Cedar: Durable with natural resistance to decay
Cut your lumber to size using a circular saw or miter saw. Ensure every cut is straight and clean.
Sand the wood thoroughly. Start with a coarser grit to smooth out rough patches, then refine with a finer grit for a smooth finish.
Select quality hardware that complements your design. Sturdy tracks, rollers, and handles ensure your door hangs well and moves smoothly.

Assemble and Finish the Door
- Lay out your wooden planks, starting with the longest ones as your foundation. If using a Z-brace style, incorporate it now for both visual appeal and structural support.
- Secure the planks by drilling pilot holes and using wood screws. Ensure the screws are long enough to hold firmly but don't protrude through the other side.
- Apply your chosen stain or paint evenly. After it's thoroughly dried, consider adding a sealer for extra protection against moisture and wear.

Install Hardware
Follow the hardware kit instructions carefully. Begin by securing the track above the door frame, ensuring it's level and at the right height for smooth door operation.
Hang the door onto the track, aligning it with the brackets. Check that the rollers engage smoothly and make any necessary adjustments.
Attach the handle at a comfortable height, usually between waist and shoulder level. Ensure it's securely fastened.
