Build a Wooden Sunburst Art

Creating art with your own hands can be a deeply satisfying endeavor. Crafting a wooden sunburst wall piece involves gathering the right materials and tools, setting the stage for an engaging project that brings warmth and character to any space.

Gathering Materials

For a wooden sunburst wall art project, you'll need to select the right tools and materials. Start with a variety of wood shims in different sizes – 15", 12", and 8" – to create the sun's beams.

Essential tools include:

  • Glue gun with extra glue sticks
  • Wood glue (Gorilla brand works well)
  • Gold leaf spray paint for a metallic finish
  • Small, round mirror for the center
  • Thin round wood craft circle as base
  • Sanding block for smooth edges
  • Gloves and mask for safety

If you're feeling adventurous, try using actual gold leaf for added depth. Look around your workshop – you might already have some of these supplies on hand.

Creating the Frame

Start with a lightweight basswood circle as your base. Using a jigsaw or utility knife, carefully trim materials to fit snugly against this circle. Take your time to ensure accuracy.

Secure the mirror at the center using wood glue, distributing it evenly for a strong bond. To reinforce the structure, add light backing to the wood circle. Popsicle sticks or thin, sturdy material can be trimmed and glued to the perimeter for added support.

Assembling the Sunburst

Begin with larger wood shims, placing them around the central mirror to create the first layer of beams. Ensure even spacing and consistent angles before gluing. Use your glue gun to work systematically around the mirror, applying an even line of glue to each shim.

Fill in the gaps with smaller shims, adding depth and texture to your wall art. Aim for symmetry, but allow some flexibility for a natural look. Use a straightedge if needed to maintain uniform distances and angles.

The finished piece should feel balanced. You can opt for perfect symmetry or mix heights for a more dynamic feel.

Once satisfied with your arrangement, glue confidently and let it dry for a few hours before handling.

Finishing Touches

In a well-ventilated area, apply gold leaf spray paint to your sunburst. Keep the can about a foot away to ensure a uniform layer. Once the paint has cured, add gold leaf for extra texture and richness. Gently lay the gold leaf onto selected areas and press it into place with a soft, dry brush.

For a vintage look, lightly distress parts of the gold leaf with a fine-grit sanding block. This step enhances the artisanal finish of your piece.

Finally, attach picture hangers to the back of your sunburst. D-rings or sawtooth hangers work well, depending on the weight and balance of your creation. Ensure they're evenly placed for a level wall display.
